Susan Meiselas and Wendy Ewald challenging the traditional misconception of the solo male photographer who shoots and leaves. No regard, acknowledgement, collaboration or further interaction with anyone else, especially the subjects. I like the idea of an ongoing project – carried on by others. When they display their work, the leave space for it to be added to.
Interesting idea, following on from my what-comes-to-mind-when-you-think-of-the-environment project idea. How could you involve other people?
Iconization – The act, process or result of iconizing
Iconoclastic – criticizing or attacking cherished beliefs or institutions.
- the quality or character of being material or composed of matter. “the exhibition explores the materiality of the body”
- LAW the quality of being relevant or significant.”the applicant must establish materiality on the balance of probabilities”
Q. How have you allowed the input of others to shape your photographic practice?
A. The idea of taking photos local to home. Mario Giacomelli . Mandy Barker producing something beautiful with a clear message.
Q. What is your attitude towards drawing from the ideas of other people, or their work?
A. Being inspired by others as opposed to mimicking. There is no such thing as a completely new idea. Everything is based on something else.
Q. How do you discern between ‘collaboration’, ‘appropriation’ and ‘plagiarism’?
https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/a/appropriation
A. Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s idea as your own. Appropriation could be borderline plagiarism (see Marlboro image example).
